What inspired you to start Just Kidding Event Childcare?

When I moved here from Jamaica in 2006, I didn’t have a support system for childcare. It was really a challenge for me as a working mother. I missed out on events that would have helped me further my career. Fast forward several years later, I needed to find a school that was a good fit for my 4-year-old son. When the Sprout School opened at the Children’s Museum of Richmond, we visited their open house and my son loved it! The other children were captivated too. I noticed that the Sprout School’s hands-on, interactive, STEAM activities kept the kids engaged for hours. As an educator for over 25 years, I love to stimulate a child’s curiosity for math and science. And I love to see learning extend far beyond the classroom. That’s what gave me the idea for Just Kidding Event Childcare. We create on-site STEAM inspired activities for children at conferences, corporate events, weddings, and parties. Parents and event planners can relax knowing that we’re providing fun, safe, and engaging childcare.

What are some of the challenges you’re proud to have overcome so far?

Writing a business plan is something I’m proud to have done. No one takes you seriously until you have a business plan. And getting my business license was more challenging than I expected because I don’t have a dedicated facility. It took a lot of research and hard work. I’m also grateful for the resources from UnBound RVA. I can now proudly say that Just Kidding Event Childcare is up and running!

In what way did Dunlap Law help your business with a legal challenge?

We work with children, so I need to be especially careful with contracts and policies. Tricia Dunlap walked me through the various legal documents I’d need to avoid risk and protect my interests. She also helped me write my contracts for clients and for employees. Legal services can be very expensive. I’m so fortunate that Tricia’s partnership with UnBound RVA came at the perfect time!

What’s in the future for Just Kidding Event Childcare?

We’re just getting started, so marketing in the Richmond area is my focus right now. We’re also developing new activities and trying them out with small groups of children to refine our processes. Weddings and corporate events are becoming more casual, fun, and family-friendly. That’s a great trend for us because we involve children in the celebration in a safe and appropriate way.
